Making the right travel choice

On behalf of the North East Joint Transport Committee we are pleased to publish our latest strategy- the Making the Right Travel Choice Strategy- which aims to make it easier for local people to make more sustainable journeys such as journeys on foot, by bike or using public transport.

The strategy

The strategy encourages car users to switch one journey a week to public transport, walking or cycling and for people who don’t have access to a car to continue to travel sustainably.

Small changes to how we travel will help us to make a big difference – cleaning up our air, lowering carbon emissions, reducing congestion on our roads and improving the health and wellbeing of local people.

You can read the strategy below:

Should you require the strategy in an alternative format please get in touch.

As part of the creation of the strategy we ran an 8-week consultation and engagement campaign from 20 July- 14 September 2022.

The consultation consisted of a public event programme, with pop-up events held in each of the 7 Local Authority areas, an online survey, advertising and social media, as well as a separate stakeholder campaign consisting of an online survey and online Zoom events.

The consultation centred on getting people’s thoughts about what they think could be introduced to get more people travelling sustainably and what action they think they could take to switch one journey a week to a sustainable form of transport.

In total we received almost 1,000 responses from members of the public and stakeholders.

Responses from the consultation were built into the final version of the strategy which was approved by the North East Joint Transport Committee in November.
