Strategy & Policy

On behalf of the North East Joint Transport Committee, Transport North East is responsible for delivering policies and strategies that move the North East closer to becoming a green, healthy, dynamic and thriving region. 

The North East Transport Plan sets out our aspirations for travel up until 2035. A series of accompanying strategies are in development.

North East Zero Emission Vehicle Strategy
The new North East ZEV Strategy mainly focuses on car and van drivers that will rely on the publicly available infrastructure network in the region to charge their electric vehicle and aims deliver reliable public ZEV charging infrastructure across the North East, wherever people need it.
North East Active Travel Strategy
The new Active Travel Strategy will form the basis of future funding bids which could transform the way we travel every day for work, education and leisure up to 2035 and aims for walking, cycling and wheeling to become the natural first choice for short everyday trips.
Making the right travel choice
On behalf of the North East Joint Transport Committee we are working on a new strategy – Making the Right Travel Choice which aims to make it easier for local people make more sustainable journeys.  
North East Bus Service Improvement Plan
The region’s first BSIP unveiled a new £804 million bid to Government which transport leaders are confident will transform bus services across the North East.
North East Transport Plan
The North East Transport Plan sets out our region’s transport aspirations up to 2035. It brings to life our transport aspirations and includes a live programme of around 243 schemes which equal at least £6.8bn of transport investment.
North East Rail and Metro Strategy
Following the publication of the North East Transport Plan in 2021, the North East Rail and Metro Strategy (NERMS) has been created which sets out how Rail and Metro can play a key role in achieving our region’s shared transport vision and objectives.
