North East Transport Plan

The North East Transport Plan sets out our region’s transport aspirations up to 2035. It brings to life our transport aspirations and includes a live programme of around 243 schemes which equal at least £6.8bn of transport investment – a figure which will grow over the lifespan of the Plan.

This programme will help to make a big difference to the lives of people in the North East – our health, our environment and our economy.  For years our region has seen dramatically lower levels of transport investment than other areas of the country.

The Transport Plan will address this imbalance and boost spending on schemes which will be ‘game-changing’ for the North East and how we travel each day.

“Developing our network is key to unlocking our green transport ambitions. It will boost our economy, increase connectivity across the North East and help us to overcome long-standing health, social and economic inequalities.”

Cllr Martin Gannon, Chair, North East Joint Transport Committee

The Plan covers the seven local authority areas of our two combined authorities:

  • The North East Combined Authority (Durham, Gateshead, South Tyneside and Sunderland),
  • The North of Tyne Combined Authority (Newcastle upon Tyne, North Tyneside and Northumberland).

The North East Transport Plan was published in 2021 following approval by the North East Joint Transport Committee.
