Transformational plans to revamp Sunderland’s central train station are underway, with a £26m boost that will form the first phase of a multi-phased revamp of the transport hub.
The six-year programme will fully transform the passenger arrival to the thriving City of Sunderland, enabling easy, sustainable travel into and out of the City, connecting people to jobs and opportunities in a cleaner, greener way to level up the economy in the North East.
Transforming Cities funding has been secured to help develop the southern entrance of Sunderland Train Station which opened its doors in December 2023.
The southern entrance of the station features a large glass wrap around design and includes a new ticket office and reception, public toilets, retail space and cafes, comfortable waiting areas, as well as a new mezzanine level that has office space reserved for rail industry staff. The project was driven by Sunderland City Council, in partnership with Network Rail, Nexus, Grand Central and Northern Rail.
Beyond the work on the southern concourse, council leaders are looking to secure further funding to revamp the wider station as part of a ‘one station vision’. This includes transforming the northern entrance, the platform-level of the station, the introduction of a new escalator to improve passenger access, extension of tracks and platforms to accommodate Metro services on one platform and mainline rail services on others.
