Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS)

Project theme | Public transport, bus travel |
Start date | April 2022 |
Stage | In delivery |
Expected completion date | March 2023 |
Location | Across the North East |
Funding | Transforming Cities Fund |
The North East is set to benefit from a series of traffic signals upgrades on major bus routes across the region.
Almost £20 million will be invested through the Transforming Cities Fund to modernise and connect traffic signals across the North East to improve millions of passengers journeys each year, improve the reliability of our region’s buses and reduce congestion.
Major bus routes will be upgraded which will enable the prioritisation of buses at key junctions to help improve bus reliability and journey times. The first phase of work to install new traffic signals across key bus routes begins in April 2022.
The second phase of the scheme will enable vehicle location tracking and enhanced real-time passenger information to ensure that buses have priority at traffic junctions. This will deliver improvements to the real-time passenger information which is already available via the bus operators’ mobile phone apps.
Full details of works planned for each area, including details of any disruption to the public, will be provided from June, and will be available at www.connectingthenortheast.commonplace.is/.
