Funding secured for new electric buses

The North East has secured a new £7.4m grant from the Zero Emission Bus Regional Areas round 2 scheme (ZEBRA 2).

The new funding, combined with match-funding from local bus operators including Arriva, Stagecoach and Go North East, will help to deliver 43 brand new Zero Emission Buses in the North East.

The new buses are expected to enter service by December 2025 and, combined with earlier investment, this will mean that one in ten North East buses are zero emission. Their introduction will also allow some older and more polluting vehicles to be withdrawn from service.

Our ZEBRA 2 funded buses will serve routes across Durham, Gateshead, and Newcastle. They will include enhanced accessibility features, including an additional space which can be used by a second wheelchair, or parent with buggy as well as audio-visual next-stop passenger information.
