Coronavirus Bus Service Support Grant

North East Joint Transport Committee

Bus Service Support Gran

The Bus Service Support Grant was provided by the Department for Transport to local transport authorities between March and June 2020. The North East Joint Transport Committee used £896,495.07 of government grant funding (through its partners Durham County Council, Nexus, and Northumberland County Council) to help support tendered bus services in the region. This was used to cover some of the shortfall in bus operators’ fares income during this period, additional cleaning and personal protective equipment (PPE), and to support community transport.

Commercially operated bus services received similar financial support which was paid directly to bus operators by the Department for Transport.

The Local Transport Authority COVID-19 Bus Service Support Grant (CBSSG) restart scheme

This scheme provided follow-on funding of £3,585,865.90 to the region for the period between 6th July 2020 and 31 August 2021. This was also used to cover some of the shortfall in bus operators’ fares income during this period, additional cleaning and PPE, and to support community transport.

The COVID-19 related grants to the North East Joint Transport Committee were used in accordance with conditions as set out by the Department for Transport and were subject to audit.

A list of the services supported through CBSSG restart funding can be found here.
